Regarding Proposed Softball/Baseball
Complex

Wesselman Nature Society (WNS)
has received many inquiries about
the Softball/Baseball Complex that Evansville Conventions and VisitorsBureau (ECVB) is
proposing to construct on an
existing park site and on the
Roberts Stadium lot, adjacent to Wesselman Park and Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, and the impact it would have upon the
Nature Preserve. We can only
speak on behalf of WNS, and
cannot speak for our neighbors
or for the City of Evansville.

WNS is committed to
representing the best interests
of Wesselman Woods Nature
Preserve. We agree with the comments of John Bacone, Director
of Nature Preserves for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources
when he recently stated
“It is difficult to adequately convey
the uniqueness of Wesselman Woods…it is highly unusual and fortunate for such a fine forest to
be within the city limits of a city
the size of Evansville.” While no independent impact study has
been conducted to date, WNS is reviewing other applicable
scientific research related to the possible effects similar proposed developments might have on woodlands similar to our city’s
unique urban old growth forest, specifically including concerns over
the potential impact of light, water
and noise pollution. In addition,
the ECVB recently agreed to
conduct an independent
environmental feasibility
assessment, which we hope
will provide additional info-
rmation for consideration.

WNS appreciates all efforts of the
ECVB to provide a transparent
process for its proposal. As the
ECVB continues to clarify and
finalize its design for the project,
WNS will continue to evaluate
the impact the design will have
upon Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve. Once the design
proposal is finalized, and the
results of the environmental
feasibility assessment reviewed,
WNS will be better able to
assess the impact of this
project upon Wesselman
Woods Nature Preserve.
